Starting solid foods to prevent picky eating

Do you want your baby to eat REAL food?

Workshop with Denaye Barahona, Ph.D. FOUNDER OF SIMPLE FAMILIES

Why does the first year matter?

The first year of life is the ideal time to set up positive feeding habits that can last a lifetime.

In the first year of life our children are slowly introduced to solid food. The goal is to transition children from a milk-based diet to a real-food diet around the first birthday.

To move towards this goal, three main elements should be considered:

  • Adequate exposure to taste variety
  • Intentional introduction of textures
  • Development of a positive parent-child feeding dynamic

Debunking the myths

We'll talk about the research around starting solids and dispell many of the myths.

  • Is store-bought baby food bad?
  • Should you start with vegetables--if so, which ones?
  • How can a baby chew without teeth?
  • Should you introduce one food at a time?
  • Do you have to avoid peanuts?
  • Is it okay to force kids to take a bite?

We'll talk about all these.

How to feed babies

We will look past the traditional way of spoon-feeding purees and consider other options that set babies up for success.

We'll start talking about the mechanics: How to actually get the food into our children. In this workshop, we will discuss how to prepare real food for babies and let them feed themselves (+why this matters!).

This includes:

  • Prepping Food for Babies
  • Baby-Led Weaning
  • The Montessori Approach to Weaning
  • Progressive Chopping
